Below is an example of an Omega watch that has been dismantled. As you can see from the photos we do take the watch completely apart to have a look at all the parts individually so any wear can be assessed. All parts are cleaned in an ultrasonic bath; see article on cleaning. They are then reassembled and lubricated see article on Lubrication.

WATCH SERVICING GUIDE

We use Mobieus oils on all watches and clocks these are the recommended oils and grease as used by the Swiss watch industry. They are  very expensive but each has a specific  viscosity for its particular position used.

CLEANING

We use traditional hand cleaning to remove some of the old oil particularly if there has been an over generous oiling in the past. The wheels pinions and plates are inspected to see if any refurbishment is needed. Then the parts are hand or ultrasonically cleaned. In the case of watches there is  a wash then two rinses before drying of the parts is carried out.

CLOCK CLEANING GUIDE

Clock cleaning is very similar to the watch but different chemicals are used as the clock is exposed to the air and dust. This will deteriorate the oil and make virtually a grinding paste that will enlarge the holes in the plates of the clock and if the clock is not serviced fairly regularly then the mesh of the wheels and pinions can increase and cause damage. Modern oils are not so prone to them deteriorating as quickly as the old mineral oils that is why we use synthetic oils as specified in the lubrication article .Different companies will give different service intervals but we would advise  to have the clock looked at every 5 years to see what is happening not necessarily to have a major overhaul but just to keep track of wear and tear.
